Age Groupings

• Some of our programs are shared parent-child experiences and require an adult with each child.   Other programs are for children only.
• Programs with age ranges are only for children who fall into that range by the class date.
• Adult programs are for anyone 15 years old and older.
• Family and Friends programs are for adults and anyone 4 years or older, unless otherwise
  specified. An adult must accompany anyone who is younger than 15 or as noted in program   description.

There are four ways to register:

Register online! You must have a Household Number and Password. First time users of this system must establish an account. Please note that some of our programs require county residency, and therefore we will need to confirm your information, and will mail you an email confirmation with your household number. To create an account, click here and follow instructions.

• Visit the Environmental Education Center. The office is open seven days a week (closed holidays), between 9:00am and 4:30pm, trails dawn to dusk. Checks, charge or cash! If registering for two or more trips and you plan to pay by check, you may need to bring more than one check for your registration.

• Mail a check to the Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge, New Jersey 07920. To expedite your registration, please include the course code, title, date, time, and location of program, as well as a telephone number where you can be reached. Include a separate check for each program. Please make your check(s) payable to Somerset County Park Commission.

• Register by telephone! If you have Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express, you may call 908 766-2489. Individuals with hearing or speech impairments may call the Relay Service @ 711 to register. Please call between 9:00am and 4:30pm daily.

• A person may register for his/her own household only.

Registration Dates
SPACES IN OUR PROGRAMS ARE NOT RESERVED UNTIL PAYMENT IS RECEIVED. The program guide will be released Thursday, May 1, 2008.
          • On-line and walk-in registration will begin Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 10:00am.
          • Phone-in registration will begin Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 10:00am.

Waiting Lists
Some classes fill very quickly and we take names for waiting lists. We cannot guarantee enrollment.

Cancellations (by us): Programs are sometimes cancelled due to low enrollment or weather conditions. You will be notified by phone and given an option of a credit or a full refund.

Cancellations (by you): The Somerset County Park Commission will refund program registration fees if notified prior to seven days to the start of the program.

Mailing List/Library Privileges
For a yearly fee of $5.00 per household, library visitors are extended borrowing privileges at the Environmental Education Center's Library. Our collection includes an extensive natural history section, as well as many fine children's books and a growing collection of environmental videos. The fee also includes one year mailing (three issues) of the Park Commission Parks, People, and Programs Guide.

Program Locations
The Somerset County Park Commission Naturalists lead all of the programs. Many are conducted at the Environmental Education Center in Lord Stirling Park, Basking Ridge. Classes also meet at other Somerset County parks. The location for each class is abbreviated under the class description and defined as follows:

All Naturalist-led trips and their enrolled participants will begin from, and end at, the Environmental Education Center without exception.

For all of our programs, assisted listening devices for individuals with hearing impairments can be reserved by calling 908 766-2489 in advance. Individuals with a hearing or speech impairment may call the Relay Service at 711.

Educational Programs for Children

A guide to the seasonal programs offered at the Environmental Education Center is published in January, May, and September each year by the Courier News, and mailed to individuals on our mailing list. If you wish to be added to our list, you may call the Center at 908 766-2489. Please be aware that program maximum enrollment is met quickly; we advise you register as soon as possible in accordance with the registration dates.

Programs are age-range specific in order to ensure full enrichment for each child. The child must be the minimum age and no older than the maximum age listed on the date the program is offered. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us achieve a high level of programming for each and every participant.

The furthest you can travel on the Environmental Education Center trails are the Boondocks Boardwalk, back along the Passaic River. These more remote locations receive fewer visitors than other parts of the park. Take a hike with a Naturalist to the furthest reaches of the park to look for signs of animals and interesting plants. During this three-week adventure for teens, spend 11 days experiencing the diversity of Costa Rica. Upon returning home, spend three days preparing for our Family and Friends Night. Join us as we observe the swamp’s cycles through the year! A Naturalist will guide you along our trails to discover and compare the swamp from one month to the next. Costa Rica A Trip for Adults
(Adult, ages 18 and older)

For a second year we will be offering a trip for adults to tropical Costa Rica for education and recreation. Learn through experience just how diverse and dynamic rainforests can be. The biodiversity of plant species is amazing with bromeliads growing on tree limbs and there are under-story communities as lush as the canopy vegetation. Birders will be interested to see many familiar avian species mixing with the local tropical avian communities. Experience how all these elements come together to create a unique tropical habitat. Canoe and Kayak Programs

The Somerset County Park Commission offers a variety of canoeing and kayaking opportunities to stimulate awareness and understanding of the environment, build an appreciation of New Jersey waterways, and promote interest in canoeing and kayaking. Trips will run unless dangerous or threatening weather occurs. All canoeing and kayaking programs are designed for adults and families. Participants are welcome to bring their own equipment, at their own risk; however, there is no reduction in price. Attendance at introductory programs is required prior to participating in canoe or kayak trips. A person may register for his/her own household only.

CAN-U-CANNU??
After a “splashing” time at these introductory canoe classes, you will have learned basic paddling techniques, safety aspects of canoeing, and handling a canoe in and out of the water. We require attendance at this class prior to participation in our canoe trips. These programs offer an opportunity for adults and children, ages 6 and over, to learn to canoe. An adult must accompany children, and paddlers must be at least 8 years old. Each canoe can accommodate two paddlers and a child passenger. Classes will take place on Branta Pond at the Environmental Education Center.

Canoe and Kayak Trips

All trips will be for both canoes and kayaks together (Canyak) or just kayaks or canoes. Our trips are intended for beginner to intermediate paddlers. Prior participation in one of our CAN-U-CANNU or KAN-U-KAYAK classes is required. Boats, equipment, transportation, and leadership are provided. A review of basic canoeing and/or kayaking techniques starts each trip, then onto the water for an exciting educational experience. All return times are approximate. Duration and degree of difficulty listed in ascending order. Due to possible low water conditions, there may be changes in destinations or cancellations.

Passaic Paddle
The Passaic River winds through the Great Swamp basin, flowing through floodplain forest, and many unique wetland habitats. We will paddle this gentle river, home to turtles, herons, frogs, and fish. All classes will meet at the Environmental Education Center.

Trenton Marsh Meander
Barely one mile away from our state capital’s golden dome sits a beaver lodge in the quiet wetlands of the Trenton-Hamilton Marsh. This large expanse of woodlands, tidal marsh, and streams has a rich history of human habitation. We will paddle into the marsh with the incoming tide, take a walk at Roebling Park, and catch the outgoing tide back to Bordentown Beach. Afterward we will stop for dinner. Pine Barrens Canyak and Camp Weekend
Rivers in the NJ Pinelands offer some of the best paddling in the state! Enjoy a Memorial Day weekend trip of primitive camping and paddling these pristine, tea-colored streams. Leaving Friday morning, we will camp overnight in a state park and spend our weekend paddling and exploring cranberry bogs and other interesting habitats found within the Pine Barrens. We will return to the EEC on Sunday late-afternoon. Bring your own tent and camping gear. Sedge Island Getaway Weekend

Whitewater Challenge
(Adults only)
This summer we are offering a special trip to qualified kayak paddlers. We are heading to the Deerfield River in western Massachusetts for two days of camping and beginner whitewater kayaking. This beautiful and exciting Class II river is located near the town of Charlemont. In order to join this trip, you must successfully complete our basic whitewater paddling requirements in a solo kayak. The trip includes campsite costs, transportation, leadership and most kayaking equipment. Participants are responsible for their own tent and camping gear, kayaking helmet, and food.

Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is available at Green Knoll Golf Course located on Garretson Road in Bridgewater (908 722-1301) and Spooky Brook Golf Course located on New Brunswick Road in Franklin Township (908 873-2242) from 8am - 4pm. Cross-country skiing is also available on the trails at the Environmental Education Center (EEC) located on Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge (908 766-2489) from 9am - 5pm. Skiers may not use the trails solo, so please come with a partner. Please call the phone numbers listed next to each facility for additional information.

The Environmental Education Center has several miles of trails suitable for cross-country skiing when weather conditions permit. The trails are mostly level and wide, making this beautifully rustic area particularly suitable for beginners or novice skiers. Please bring you own ski equipment. Our facility is open every day from 9am - 5pm (except on certain holidays). No single skiers allowed, so please come with a partner or friends. Skiing is only allowed when there is more than four inches of snow on the trails.
