Cross-country Ski Trip to Lapland Lakes – 2014

(Families with children 12 or older and Friends)
Learn to ski this four-day cross-country ski trip to rustic Lapland Lakes Cross Country Ski Center in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Trip includes three nights' accommodations in rustic cabins, four breakfasts, three dinners, and unlimited use of groomed, wooded trails at Lapland Lake. Snowshoeing, winter hikes, and friendly Naturalists will make this a trip to remember. Space is limited. Call to request a brochure with more detailed information. "I ♥ Horses" Valentine Introductory Trail Ride

This Valentine's Day weekend, fall in love with a four-footed friend. This one hour, walk-only trail ride is designed for riders with little or no experience and begins with a brief lesson in the indoor arena with one of Lord Stirling Stable's riding instructors. Participants must be at least 9 years of age and weigh less than 200 lbs. Registration is open from January 27 – February 6, 2014.

Register as an individual or as a team of friends, families, scout groups, co-workers, sports teams, etc. All are welcome to enter! Receive a daily log and record the simple tasks you complete to minimize your carbon footprint! Tasks may include, but are not limited to: Turn the lights off when you leave a room, ride your bike or walk instead of driving, use reusable bags when shopping, plant a native plant garden or tree, use reusable containers when bringing a lunch to work or school, then create a display of posters, pictures, etc. showing your contribution to the environment! Displays will be exhibited at the Environmental Education Center.

Make a Hypertufa Mini-Trough
May 9
Hypertufa is a handmade material which resembles "tufa," a rugged volcanic rock used to make planting troughs. These containers are especially suited for small rock garden plants. You will make your own hypertufa mini-trough and receive instructions for curing it at home. Wear work clothes as the process can be messy. We will also take a walk through the Garden to see the different large hypertufa troughs on display. Workshop fee includes the cost of supplies.

"Restore the Raritan Canoe & Kayak Rally"
June 8
The Rally is a 10-mile educational paddling event featuring talks by John Jengo about the benefits of dam removal on the Raritan as well as talks by CJST focusing on cleaning the Raritan. The launch point will be at the 'Headgates Dam" on the western side of Duke Island Park. Participants should drop off their canoes and kayaks at Lot 13 by the maintenance building and then quickly move their vehicles over to either Lot C or Lot D for the duration of the event.

Time to turn off those video games and computers! Disconnect from electronics and let nature reconnect you to your wild side! Challenge yourself to an unforgettable adventure! Meet new friends or bring the old; two Environmental Education Center Naturalists are sure to teach you how to crank up the fun factor! No experience necessary, all you need is a will for adventure! Day trips may include hiking the Appalachian Trail, swimming in glacial lakes, splashing around waterfalls, rock climbing, kayaking, white water rafting, and an overnight Sedge Island experience clamming and snorkeling in Barnegat Bay! All "extreme" equipment will be provided, but participants are expected to pack a lunch and snacks. Register for one trip or for all trips!

Flower & Garden Photography
September 13
Experience the Perennial Garden with your camera like never before. Join professional photographer Brien Szabo for a brief lecture in the Horticulture Building and then hands on adventure in creating stunning flower images and garden landscape photographs in the Perennial Garden. You will be immersed in both creative and technical approaches that are aimed at improving your photography or simply giving you alternative ideas to help spark your own creativity. The class is aimed at all levels of photography. Every participant will have the opportunity to work one on one with the instructor.

Lord Stirling 1770's Festival

Environmental Science Fall Programs
October 1 – January 31
Naturalist led workshops, walks, lectures, trips, and related activities for children, families, and adults. After school, evening, and weekend times are scheduled throughout the year. Fees and pre registration for most programs. Conducted at the EEC, Sourland Mountain Preserve, Colonial Park, Washington Valley, and other parks.

Make a Hypertufa Mini-Trough
October 3
Hypertufa is a handmade material which resembles "tufa," a rugged volcanic rock used to make planting troughs. These containers are especially suited for small rock garden plants. You will make your own hypertufa mini-trough and receive instructions for curing it at home. Wear work clothes as the process can be messy. We will also take a walk through the Garden to see the different large hypertufa troughs on display. Workshop fee includes the cost of supplies. Pre-registration is required.
Enrollment is limited to 10 participants.

Art in the Garden - Watercolors in the Garden
October 16
Nature and wildlife artist Beatrice Bork will lead a one-day class at Leonard J. Buck Garden to capture the garden's beauty on paper. Students will be guided in choosing a location when painting outdoors, paint application, mixing colors, composition, and how to create a finished watercolor painting. Basic drawing skills are recommended. Call for art supply list and bring your lunch. Ms. Bork, internationally known nature and wildlife artist, has received many special achievements and awards during her career. Pre-registration is required. Rain Date 10/17/14.

"By the Light of the Moon"

Flower & Landscape Photography – Autumnal Brilliance

While each season in Buck Garden has its own special qualities, none are quite as spectacular as the colors of the trees and shrubs in the fall. Lecture and field session will cover the use of light, composition, landscape photography, close-ups, and how to find the right picture. The workshop will be taught by Nature Photographer Brien Szabo. The class is designed for all levels of digital and film photographers. Pre-registration is required.

19th Annual Turkey Trot
November 15
Lace up your sneakers for the Turkey Trot 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk. The course is certified in length and USATF sanctioned. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female 5K finishers in each of the several age groups. T-shirts guaranteed only to those who register by November 2.
