Cross-country Ski Trip to Lapland Lakes – 2015
February 5 - 8
(Families with children 12 or older and Friends)
Learn to ski this four-day cross-country ski trip to rustic Lapland Lakes Cross Country Ski Center in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Trip includes three nights' accommodations in rustic cabins, three breakfasts, three soup lunches, four dinners, and unlimited use of groomed, wooded trails at Lapland Lake. Snowshoeing, winter hikes, and friendly Naturalists will make this a trip to remember. Space is limited. Call to request a brochure with more detailed information. "I ♥ Horses" Valentine Introductory Trail Ride

This Valentine's Day weekend, fall in love with a four-footed friend. This one hour, walk-only trail ride is designed for riders with little or no experience and begins with a brief lesson in the indoor arena with one of Lord Stirling Stable's riding instructors. Participants must be at least 9 years of age and weigh less than 200 lbs. Registration is open from January 26 – February 5, 2015.

ECO-RALLY!

Register as an individual or as a team of friends, families, scout groups, co-workers, sports teams, etc. All are welcome to enter! Receive a list of simple tasks you complete to minimize your carbon footprint! Tasks may include, but are not limited to: Turn the lights off when you leave a room, ride your bike or walk instead of driving, use reusable bags when shopping, plant a native plant garden or tree. Then create a display of posters, pictures, etc. showing your contribution to the environment! Awards will be given for creativity and outstanding achievements. Displays will be exhibited at the Environmental Education Center.

Make a Hypertufa Mini-Trough
May 8
Hypertufa is a handmade material which resembles "tufa," a rugged volcanic rock used to make planting troughs. These containers are especially suited for small rock garden plants. You will make your own hypertufa mini-trough and receive instructions for curing it at home. Wear work clothes as the process can be messy. We will also take a walk through the Garden to see the different large hypertufa troughs on display. Workshop fee includes the cost of supplies.

Flower & Landscape Photography - Alternative Approaches

This class will involve technical instruction focusing on alternative approaches to flower and landscape photography. We'll explore the abstract side of photography from multiple exposure images, using filters, blur techniques, and more. This class will include a lecture and shooting session in the garden. Flower Buds – Children's Garden Workshop (NEW PROGRAM)

Come join the Horticulture staff and create Colonial Park's first Children's Garden. Children will be creating a butterfly, hummingbird, and goldfinch friendly garden which will be enjoyed by all visitors throughout the growing season. Participants will sow seeds, plant annuals and perennials and will take home a flower of their choice from seeds. Workshop is limited to 10 children ages 5 to 8 and must be accompanied by an adult. Instruction is for a week, and begins with proper posture, grip, stance, and goes on to teach putting, chipping, and pitch shots. The young golfers gradually begin to use the mid to longer irons and build confidence and more successes. By the end of the week golfers will begin to use the longest clubs, the woods, and work on bunker shots. Ages 8 - 17.

40th Annual Rose Day
June 13 (rain or shine)
Thousands of roses will be in peak bloom. Lectures and demonstrations will be presented. Horticulture staff and members of the Jersey Shore Rose Society will be available to answer questions. Plants and complimentary refreshments will be available.

Day trips may include hiking the Appalachian Trail, swimming in glacial lakes, splashing around waterfalls, rock climbing, kayaking, white water rafting, and an overnight Sedge Island experience clamming and snorkeling in Barnegat Bay! All "extreme" equipment will be provided, but participants are expected to pack a lunch and snacks. Register for one trip or for all trips!

Make a Hypertufa Mini-Trough

Hypertufa is a handmade material which resembles "tufa," a rugged volcanic rock used to make planting troughs. These containers are especially suited for small rock garden plants. You will make your own hypertufa mini-trough and receive instructions for curing it at home. Wear work clothes as the process can be messy. We will also take a walk through the Garden to see the different large hypertufa troughs on display. Workshop fee includes the cost of supplies. Pre-registration is required.

"Home on the Range" Introductory Western Horseback Ride
October 11
This program offers a great opportunity to become more familiar with Western style horseback riding. Riders will receive a brief group lesson with one of Lord Stirling Stable's riding instructors, followed by a one hour trail ride. This program is limited to seven participants. Riders must be at least 9 years of age, weigh less than 200 pounds, and be at least 5'0" tall. Registration is open in the Stable office from September 28 – October 8.

Autumn Wumpus Hunt (Friends of Lord Stirling Stable)

Groups enjoy a trail ride/warmup, then "Hunt the Wumpus". Ribbons awarded to first rider in each group to sight the Wumpus. Art in the Garden - Watercolors in the Garden
October 15 (rain date: October 16)
Nature and wildlife artist Beatrice Bork will lead a one-day class at Leonard J. Buck Garden to capture the garden's beauty on paper. Students will be guided in choosing a location when painting outdoors, paint application, mixing colors, composition, and how to create a finished watercolor painting. Basic drawing skills are recommended. Call for art supply list and bring your lunch. Ms. Bork, internationally known nature and wildlife artist, has received many special achievements and awards during her career. Pre-registration is required. .

"By the Light of the Moon"

All ages.
Led by a Naturalist, adventurers will explore the Great Swamp while listening for animal sounds and using their night vision to walk the swampy trails beneath the stars. Walks will depart every 15 minutes with concurrent indoor activities including a maze, live critters, refreshments, and more. Rain date: October 17

Halloween Hullabaloo

All ages are welcome to join us for a wild afternoon rumpus! At 1pm, a live animal will be presented. Following the program, try your hand at a plethora of carnival-like games for the whole family. Light refreshments and music included. It is sure to be oodles of fun! Pre-registration not required.

Flower & Landscape Photography – Autumnal Brilliance

While each season in Buck Garden has its own special qualities, none are quite as spectacular as the colors of the trees and shrubs in the fall. Lecture and field session will cover the use of light, composition, landscape photography, close-ups, and how to find the right picture. The workshop will be taught by Nature Photographer Brien Szabo. The class is designed for all levels of digital and film photographers. Pre-registration is required.

Mischief Night Madness

20th Annual Turkey Trot
November 14
Lace up your sneakers for the final Turkey Trot 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk. The course is certified in length and USATF sanctioned. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female 5K finishers in each of the several age groups. T-shirts guaranteed only to those who register by October 30.

Thankful Lights - Floating Luminaries at Leonard J. Buck Garden (NEW)

Borrowed from a traditional Japanese ceremony, floating a candle on water is thought to awaken the spirit of nature within us all. You will create your own lantern and decorate it with a personalized message, attach it to your illuminated float, and release it on Buck Garden's Lower Pond. Come see and experience how magical the floating lights are as they drift on the water into the night. Materials will be supplied. Pre-registration is required.

With everyone around for the holiday, the "rider in the family" can share their love of horses with the rest of the clan! A brief mini lesson will take place before a one hour trail ride. Inexperienced riders will enjoy a leisurely walk along the trails; a walk/trot ride will be available for more seasoned equestrians. Cross-Country Skier - Environmental Education Center

December is the time to visit the Environmental Education Center and get into the holiday spirit. The Festival of Trees is an indoor exhibit of decorated trees by various community groups and individuals. Come and enjoy live holiday music on select Saturdays and Sundays.

Holiday Kissing Ball Workshop (NEW PROGRAM)

Horticulture staff will share with participants on a number of holiday tips on how to create your own beautiful holiday kissing ball using fresh materials.
