Native Bees – Who are They and Why Should I Care?
January 28
The news is full of doom and gloom about the European honeybee, a bee species brought to this continent for honey by Colonists, and now employed primarily in crop pollination. But for millennia, the 4,000 species of bees native to this country (and 400 native to New Jersey) were the primary pollinators. While they provide sustainable pollination services, we hardly know anything about them. Meet bee researcher and Rutgers PhD fellow, Michael Roswell for an exploration of some of the most beautiful wildlife ever to visit your backyard, Find out what they look like, how they live, and what scientists are trying to learn about them. Bring your questions!

Invaders: Invasive Plants and Insects
February 11 – March 12, except February 13 and February 20
What are invasive species, and how do they affect the ecosystem? In this exhibition Ridge High School art students researched and examined how an invasive species can significantly harm ecosystems. These projects allowed students to research and explore invasive species and then create new artwork based on their findings. The exhibition will feature drawings, alongside inventive "Artist Books" and board games. This new body of work explores the introduction, ecology, and environmental impact of invasive plants on our delicate ecosystems. The ethereal nature of the drawings created from invasive plant specimens evokes the element of time and a potential future where our inaction will lead to a drastically altered landscape.

Monarch butterflies will only lay eggs on milkweed. For black swallowtails, it's only plants in the carrot family (Apiaceae). Great Tree Men and Women of America - NEW
November 5
Early colonists depended on the land and forests to survive and make a living, not thinking about woodland destruction, and not planning for future forest needs. Nearly 150 years later, significant public concern developed about preservation of natural lands. Naturalists such as J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day, and Henry David Thoreau wrote extensively about the nature that surrounded them. Mary Fenimore Cooper described nature in a refreshing, poetic way. These three and others, such as John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt, brought environmental concerns to the public's attention. This resulted in the establishment of national parks and forest preserves that could be enjoyed by everyone. Join us for an informative talk by Frank Goodhart.
