Educational Public Programs for April 2019

The Young Explorers Club
(Ages infant-5 with parent)
It is never too early to get little ones outdoors to experience the wonders of nature. This series will focus on developing their five senses through simple activities. Parents will share the excitement with their children during this special hour and return home with ideas to explore nature close to home.
$30 per pair/$15 per additional child for 4-day session

EEC-66 Mondays, April 1, 15, 22, 29 (No program April 8)

(Ages 5-7)
KinderNats is a program designed and geared for children currently who love being outdoors. This afterschool series will get them outside to study science and explore the natural world. These Junior Naturalists will be engaged through hiking, games, and activities. Each week will focus on a different seasonal theme. Please be dressed for all kinds of weather.
$30 for 5-day session per person

Forest Fitness
Join a weekly walking group and enhance your exercise regimen with Mother Nature! Improve your health, clear your mind, and enjoy nature as you traverse the level trails of Lord Stirling Park with a Naturalist as your guide. Leave cool, calm, and collected. Participants must be able to walk continuously at a moderate pace with occasional breaks. Bring a water bottle and a desire to leave your troubles behind. Comfortable, waterproof boots are a must in the swamp.
$25 for 5-day session per person

Tree House Gang
(Ages 3-5)
Bring your little ones to the Environmental Education Center for fun science and nature programming. These two-and-a-half hour afternoon classes will enhance learning by spending up to two hours outside exploring, hands-on activities, meeting live animals, and learning by experimenting. Each month has a different theme. Please send a small snack with your child. Please dress for the weather.
$65 for 4-day session per person

Birding at Brig
Fantastic waterfowl, amazing shorebirds, spectacular raptors, and beautiful songbirds are only a sample of what may be found residing at Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced birder, come and enjoy the sights and sounds of "Brig"! Bring binoculars and lunch.

Swamp Kids
(Ages 8-10)
Become a Swamp Kid! This program is designed to let the child's curiosity and passion guide their learning. Nature is the greatest teacher! Spring Peepers - New Program

April showers bring more than just flowers. Come learn about the different frog species we have in Lord Stirling Park. We will take a hike (if the weather permits), read stories, and make frog themed crafts. Please wear footwear appropriate for hiking.

Story Hour

Come and listen to a Naturalist read a story, relax in our comfortable library, and take a short walk. Story hour is a great way to spend some quality time with your young one while enjoying wonderful environmentally-oriented books. Pre-registration is required.

River Rats
(Ages 5-8)
Come join us for this exciting weekend learning adventure. During each monthly session, we will hike, observe the natural world, interact with live animals, and explore the Great Swamp. Each month's activities will be themed. Bring a water bottle and a snack, dress to be both indoors and out, and boots are strongly recommended.

Germ City - New Program
What does life in a big city have in common with life in the country? Microbes of course. Tour the Museum of the City of New York and discover how the city has been fighting microbes and contagious diseases since the city was established. Please wear good walking shoes and dress to be both inside and outside.

Birding at Scherman-Hoffman
Scherman-Hoffman is a great birding spot in the early spring. We will hike around the sanctuary looking for Louisiana Waterthrush and other early season warblers. The river trail is also a nice spot to look for Winter Wren and Hermit Thrush. Please wear footwear appropriate for hiking.

Frog Blob
(Ages 7-9)
Did you ever wonder how a prince becomes a frog? Well, it all starts with a little mud, melting snow, dripping ice, and a nice quiet location - or the Great Swamp at the end of winter. Join a Naturalist as we search for frog blobs, tadpoles, and those wonderful hip-hopping creatures we call frogs. Dress with the weather in mind!

Holland Ridge Farm Tulip Festival - New Program
The Garden State has a new treasure, the Holland Ridge Farm Tulip Festival! With more than two million tulips, this farm is home to the east coast's largest tulip farm! Enjoy walking through this living rainbow of blooms! Learn a bit about the biology and cultural history of this beloved plant. Dress to be outside. Boots are strongly recommended.

Green-Wood Cemetery
Join us for a relaxing day of birding at the beautiful Green-wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. Enjoy this birdwatcher's paradise by exploring the 478 acres of hills, valleys, glacial ponds, and paths. The trip wouldn't be complete without a visit to the main entrance to spy on the adorable Monk parakeets! Please bring lunch, binoculars, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Trails are open dawn to dusk daily but closed on Deer Management days as scheduled.
