Awesim Kids

It has been our pleasure to offer enriching and fun summer camp programs to the children of our community for more than 20 years! Unique camp programs for ages 4 to 16 are offered. We aim to inspire a life-long love and respect for the natural world, while cultivating a curiosity about the environment and a fondness for science. Outdoor lessons and hands-on experiences are just some of the benefits of our engaging summer programs. With nearly 500 acres of fields, forests, ponds, and river, the Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park offers unique opportunities in a natural learning environment for children of all ages.

Coyote Kids (Ages 4-6) will be back for another three sessions.
Eco-Explorers (Ages 7-9) will be offering four, one-week sessions and two, two-week sessions. 
AWESIM KIDS (ages 10-13) will be offering four, two-week sessions. 
Xtreme Adventure (ages 13-16) will be returning for another summer of adventure!

Post care for both the Eco-Explorers and AWESIM KIDS programs are available each session for an additional fee. Post care extends the program day from 4:30pm-5:30pm. Each session of Eco-Explorers and AWESIM KIDS has a non-refundable deposit of $150 per session.

Online or in-person registration begins Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 9:00am.
Phone-in or mail-in registration begins at 11:00am. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call 908 722-1200 Ext. 5002.

The Environmental Education Center welcomes everyone to participate in its programs.  If you have individualized needs due to a disability, please call 908.526.5650 and we will be happy to arrange reasonable modifications.  Six weeks notice is required to ensure that appropriate modifications can be provided.

Participant Expectations:
            -Most classes are conducted outside, so please dress accordingly.
            -Somerset County Park Commission reserves the right to remove disruptive participants and children who do not meet the age requirements.
            -Should any participants (pre-registered or unregistered) arrive after the advertised time for the start of the program, it may not be feasible for you to participate in that program.  Consequently, registration fees for pre-registered individuals will not be refunded.
            -When participating in a program or trip, both children and adults are expected to be respectful to one another as well as the Naturalist(s) leading the program or trip.  Individuals who are disrespectful may be asked to leave a program, therefore forfeiting their paid program fees, and may be declined registration for future programs and trips.  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact the Naturalist(s) and/or management.

Eco Explorers

(Ages 7-9)

For more than twenty years, Eco-Explorers has offered participants a fun-filled adventure in learning and discovery! We help develop an appreciation for nature and a fondness for science through hands-on activities. Hiking, nature lessons, canoeing, field trips, environmental games, water play or pool time, guest speakers, and more will add up to a fun and education summer! Six nature and science themed sessions are offered. Description, duration, and price vary per session.

Extended care is available each session for an additional fee. Post care extends the program day from 4:30pm-5:30pm.

A non-refundable deposit of $150 per person, per session is due at registration. Non-refundable balance is due by Wednesday, May 1.

Swamp Scientists (One-Week Session)
Put on your lab coat and join us as we conduct some fun and wacky experiments and find out more about the science behind nature! Use your newfound science skills as we hike and play to discover how things work.

We want to continue the science fun! Join us as we continue to conduct interesting science experiments and discover the ways nature works! Participants will make use of a microscope, ponding equipment and more!

Junior Naturalists (Two-Week Session)
Hike! Track! Explore! During this session you will gain identification skills and learn what it is like to be a Naturalist. This two-week adventure will have pond studies, bug collecting, tracking, and more!

Creature Feature (Two-Week Session)
The Earth has some pretty amazing animals; whale sharks, newts, lemurs, and lion fish –just to name a few. Each day we will learn about the variety of animals that live on this planet. Prepare to meet some special animal guests and become an expert!

Bugtastic (One-Week Session)
Fly, crawl, hop, and buzz through the week as we learn all about bugs and their amazing characteristics! Bugs from around the globe as well as our own backyard will be seen during your time here. You will become a bug expert!

Mystery in the Swamp (One-Week Session)
Our park is nestled within the Great Swamp and this area has a history that goes back hundreds of years! There are a lot of mysteries to solve, so get your sense of adventure ready! We will strengthen our observation skills and use some of our senses to explore interesting and historical parts of Lord Stirling Park.

AWESIM KIDS (Animals, Wetlands, Environmental Science, and Incredible Minds!)

AWESIM KIDS is a unique combination of learning and summer vacation fun. We will spend our days hiking, boating, learning about local wildlife, explor¬ing the park, meeting interesting people and professionals, and going on unique day trips each week. We encourage hands-on learning and peer leadership opportunities, working together daily in both small and large groups. Each of the four sessions, individually themed, fun STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) projects and favorite activities like berry picking, boating, and swimming are repeated throughout the summer.

Extended care is available each session for an additional fee. Post care extends the program day from 4:30pm-5:30pm.

H Meets O
Every living thing on Earth depends upon water. Join us as we learn about our amazing blue planet, both salt and fresh water habitats will be explored. Plan on getting wet and dirty as we paddle on ponds, explore streams, and spend time in kayaks. Our paddling experts will teach you the strokes, as well as how to stay safe while having a good time with friends.

Science Rules!
Nature and science go hand in hand. From slug slime to sticky webs, flashing fireflies and glowing worms, calling frogs to soaring songbirds, we will observe nature's rules about locomotion, adaptations, and much more. We will spend time hiking, boating, exploring the swamp and adventuring on day trips. STEM challenges will be part of the daily fun!

This session is all about the basics of both animal and human survival! Finding safe water for drinking, shelter for protection from the environment, gathering food along with other hands-on activities will keep this session fun. Whether making a piece of rope, learning to tie some basic knots or learning some basic wilderness first aid, we will be challenged every day.

Come enjoy nature's bounty as we learn about wild edibles and growing organic food in our AWESIM KIDS garden; test your creative culinary skills in our awesome iron chef challenges. Spend time hiking the trails in search of high bush blueberries and wild blackberries that when perfectly ripe, are tasty treats, and search for the pollinators which are responsible for making our food grow.

Coyote Kids
(Ages 4-6)

Hoooooowl! Join our pack for a fun, five-day nature program full of outdoor exploration, live animals, hands-on activities, games, and water play! This program will take place rain or shine. Pack a snack and come prepared to be outside! Full payment is due at the time of registration. Program fee is refundable if cancellation occurs a minimum of seven days prior to the start of the session.

Swamp Stomp
Dress for a mess – this is mud week! We'll be exploring soils and mud pie creations.

Xtreme Adventure

Time to turn off those videos games and computers! Disconnect from electronics and let nature reconnect you to your wild side! Challenge yourself to an unforgettable week of adventure! Two Environmental Education Center Naturalists are sure to teach you how to crank up the fun factor! No experience is necessary; all you need is a will for adventure! This year Xtreme Adventure has a new schedule! For the first time we are running a whole week full of fun day trips and activities!

A non-refundable deposit of $150 per person is due at registration. Non-refundable balance is due by Wednesday, May 1.

Xtreme Adventure Week
We have asked you what you love and the results are in! We will be stand up paddling, hiking, mini golfing, owling, and spending a day at our favorite ocean side destination, Island Beach State Park. Some days will have later start and pick-up times than others. Participants will sign up for the entire week.
