Environmental Education Seasonal Naturalist Positions

Are you looking for a rewarding and challenging job in the outdoors this summer? Do you enjoy helping children explore nature, develop wilderness skills, and experience outdoor adventures?

The Environmental Education Center (EEC) of the Somerset County Park Commission seeks highly motivated and creative naturalist assistants for their 2012 summer programs. Eco-Explorers, a day program for ages 7 to 9, and AWESIM KIDS, a day program for ages 10 to 12, offer participants exciting experiences while developing an appreciation for nature and fondness of science. Programs are based at Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge, NJ, adjacent to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. The EEC has a lot to offer patrons of all ages including over eight miles of hiking trails, diverse habitats consisting of swamp, forest, pond, and meadow, and hundreds of hours of educational programming throughout the year. The EEC provides a dynamic work environment with a friendly, creative, and knowledgeable full-time staff.

POSITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Summer Programs Naturalist Assistants: Naturalist Assistants act as lead teachers in our two-week and one-week summer session programs (Eco-Explorers and AWESIM KIDS) and develop and implement nature and science lessons. They are also responsible for gathering supplies, leading hikes, and chaperoning field trips. BA, BS or current enrollment in studies of life science, ecology, earth sciences or other natural history curriculum and / or related experience or training required. Experience teaching children, knowledge of natural history, and a love for the outdoors all a plus! First Aid and CPR certification will be included during training period. The position consists of a mandatory two-week training period in June, three two-week sessions and two one-week sessions, and a post-camp clean-up week in August. Must be able to work a flexible schedule within a Monday through Friday work week and possess a valid driver's license.

INTERNSHIPS:
The Naturalist Assistant position can be utilized as a college internship at the student's, and their advisor's, discretion. There is no housing available for this position.
