Maintenance & Painting
Assistant Maintenance is what keeps our parks beautiful. There are always nails to be pounded, walls to be washed, and loose ends to be tied. Volunteer to help make a little corner of the world a safer and cleaner place for all to enjoy. department: Environmental Science location: Lord Stirling Park, Environmental Education Center date: varies qualifications: one hour per week minimum; a friendly smile Garden Docent Come share your knowledge and love of flowers and plants with others. Docents are guides who are trained to lead tours of the Leonard J. Buck Garden in Far Hills. Training is provided by Buck Garden staff to aquaint docents with the history of the garden, horticultural practices, and plant information. Guided tours for groups are most frequently requested in May and June. department: Horticulture location: Leonard J. Buck Garden, Far Hills date: spring and fall qualifications: gardening knowledge; successful completion of training; public speaking skills Horticultural Assistant Volunteers who enjoy gardening can help maintain various garden areas within the Somerset County parks. Working with the Horticulture Department staff, volunteers will help with all of the tasks required to keep the gardens in excellent condition. Planting, watering, weeding, mulching, pruning, and deadheading flowers are some of the included tasks. department: Horticulture location: Buck Garden, Colonial Park date: varies qualifications: must be at least 16 years of age; must be available to work daytime hours Monday through Friday Horse Groom Like to be around horses up close and personal? Join us to help make our horses shine. Come groom our horses from head to tail and ears to hooves. You may even have an opportunity to blanket the horses in the cooler months. department: Lord Stirling Stable location: Lord Stirling Park date: year round, days and evenings qualifications: must have completed a mini-workshop, summer workshop, or have equivalent experience; feel at ease around horses; minimum age 14; qualify with stable supervisor; follow all safety practices Horse Tacker and Tack Cleaner Do you enjoy the smell of horses and leather? Help us tack and distribute our horses for lessons or hacking and assist in bringing them back to their stalls. Learn how to correctly take apart, clean, and put a bridle back together. Make the saddles shine! department: Lord Stirling Stable location: Lord Stirling Park date: year round, days and evenings qualifications: must have completed a mini-workshop, summer workshop, or have equivalent experience; feel at ease around horses; minimum age 14; knowledge of tack and its proper use is a plus; qualify with stable supervisor; follow all safety practices; interact with customers on a professional level Stable Cleaner Feel like getting down and dirty? Assist the staff in cleaning the horse's stalls by removing the manure and wet bedding and "fluffing" the shavings. You may also assist in adding bedding, sweeping stable aisles, filling troughs, and feeding horses. Lead non- trailcarded riders for a fun, safe ride on 10 miles of trails. Enjoy nature's beauty while keeping the lowest level riders safe following basic trail etiquette. department: Lord Stirling Stable location: Lord Stirling Park date: Sundays - March through mid-June and September through mid- December qualifications: must be an Advanced 2/AA rider or above; qualify with stable manager or supervisor; follow all safety practices; ability to judge riders skill levels; not needed, but knowledge of grooming and tacking horses a plus; good people skills; attend Volunteer Trail Guide meetings and training; certification in CPR and First Aid |
