Educational Public Programs for April 2018

The Young Explorers Club let's move
(Ages infant-5 with parent)
It is never too early to get little ones outdoors to experience the wonders of nature. This series will focus on developing their five senses through simple activities. Parents will share the excitement with their children during this special hour and return home with ideas to explore nature close to home.

KinderNats let's move
(Ages 5-7)
KinderNats is a program designed and geared for children currently who love being outdoors. This afterschool series will get them outside to study science and explore the natural world. These Junior Naturalists will be engaged through hiking, games, and activities. Each week will focus on a different seasonal theme. Please be dressed for all kinds of weather.

Forest Fitness
(Adult)
Join a weekly walking group and enhance your exercise regimen with Mother Nature! Improve your health, clear your mind, and enjoy nature as you traverse the level trails of Lord Stirling Park with a Naturalist as your guide. Leave cool, calm, and collected. Participants must be able to walk continuously at a moderate pace with occasional breaks. Bring a water bottle and a desire to leave your troubles behind. Comfortable, waterproof boots are a must in the swamp.
$20 for 4-day session per person

Tree House Gang let's move
(Ages 3-5)
Bring your little ones to the Environmental Education Center for fun science and nature programming. These two-and-a-half hour afternoon classes will enhance learning by spending up to two hours outside exploring, hands-on activities, meeting live animals, and learning by experimenting. Each month has a different theme. Please send a small snack with your child. Please dress for the weather. Please register for only the Tuesday session or the Thursday session per month. Both monthly sessions cover the same material on a weekly basis.

Green-Wood Cemetery
(Adult)
Join us for a relaxing day of birding at the beautiful Green-wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. Enjoy this birdwatcher's paradise by exploring the 478 acres of hills, valleys, glacial ponds, and paths. The trip wouldn't be complete without a visit to the main entrance to spy on the adorable Monk parakeets! Please bring lunch, binoculars, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Become a Swamp Kid! This program is designed to let the child's curiosity and passion guide their learning. Nature is the greatest teacher! Eco-Explorers Spring Break - New Program
(Ages 7-9)

Get a taste of what our summer program for 7 to 9 years of age is all about with this 3-day Eco-Explorers Spring Break program! Space is limited and we will enroll on a first come, first serve basis. Registration begins January 17 at 9:00am.

Eco-Explorers is a science program that uses a hands-on approach to encourage learning through creative expression, nature exploration, imagination, and physical skill development. Fresh air, lessons, hiking, canoeing, and games will add up to a fun and educational spring break experience!

Each day will start with a few games to break the ice and get to know one another. Every morning we will hike the trails and explore the many nature adventures the swamp has to offer. Other activities will include games, live animals, canoeing, science experiments, science demonstrations, and more. The activities will be related to the themes seen below. We will participate in outdoor activities rain or shine.

Calling all rock hounds for a day of enduring geological mystery! Check out world-famous mineral deposits as we explore an underground zinc mine, a museum of fluorescence and a gallery full of minerals, rocks, and crystals. If you dig it, then join us for some rock-star Earth Science!

Meet at the playground kiosk at Duke Island Park and head out for an exploratory hike with a Naturalist. Identify local trees and search for early blooming wildflowers along the Raritan River. Find one of Somerset County's best kept secrets, the bounty of blooming bluebell wildflowers of Duke Island Park. Pre-registration is required.

Join a Naturalist as we search for frog blobs, tadpoles, and those wonderful hip-hopping creatures we call frogs. Dress with the weather in mind!

A continuation of our birding identification series, this program will take a look at the northeastern United States' most iconic group of birds, the warblers! We have close to 30 different warbler species in our area and each one is just as pretty as the next. This class, unlike the others, will be run in the morning to coincide with the free morning bird walk.
