Torpey Athletic Complex

General Information

The Frank “Nap” Torpey Athletic Complex is an initiative of the Somerset County Park Commission that involves the development of an athletic complex on property acquired by Somerset County as part of its on-going Park/Open Space program. The property is located along the north side of the Raritan River in Bridgewater Township. The property is one of several acquired, or to be acquired, as part of the County’s Raritan River Greenway initiative; a priority park as defined by the County’s duly adopted "Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan".

Facility Amenities

  • The Torpey Complex consists of (1) lighted grass baseball field, (1) lighted grass softball field and (1) lighted state-of-the-art synthetic turf multi-purpose athletic field programmed for seasonal sports. All fields are available for rental for tournaments, league play, and practice.
  • The latest addition to the complex is a 10,000 square foot building for public and employee use with attached bleachers adding 1,000 seats to allow spectator seating of a total of 1,500.
  • The facility includes two team lockers rooms with bathrooms; large public restrooms with water fountains; a concession area with sinks and storage space; an employee room with tool and equipment storage, office, and bathroom; and a climate-controlled press box overlooking the turf field.
  • The project also includes a multi-purpose wireless scoreboard on the turf field able to accommodate scoring for all field sports. The funding for the scoreboard was provided by the Somerset County Park Foundation. Scoreboards are also in place for the baseball and softball fields.
  • Turf field lighting is satellite-controlled to eliminate wasted energy during time periods when the field is not in use.

  • The addition of the concession area, bathrooms, and locker rooms brings the Torpey Complex up to world-class status. The fields are maintained to the highest standards and now the facility, which is fully utilized by schools, municipal recreation departments, and the general public, is fully prepared to accommodate spectators.
