Overview

The Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Department is dedicated to providing year round recreation and leisure opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. The goal of the TR Department is to promote an active leisure lifestyle that improves social, physical, cognitive and emotional functioning while enhancing each person's abilities in order for them to become integrated into their community.

Therapeutic Recreation teaches new recreation skills and skills that can be transferred into everyday life as well as the constructive use of leisure time, enhances self-esteem and confidence, improves overall health and well-being, increases physical activity, fosters peer relationships, improves social skills, and develops life-long leisure skills.

With trained staff, adaptations, a structured, goal oriented program and activities modified to meet the needs of our participants, a variety of arts and cultural, social enrichment, culinary, sports and fitness, horticulture, and community outing programs and activities are offered in the evening or occasional weekends. The program is a cooperative effort between the Park Commission and various municipalities. Participating municipalities include: Bedminster, Bernards Township, Bernardsville, Bound Brook, Branchburg, Bridgewater, Green Brook, Hillsborough, Manville, Montgomery, North Plainfield, Raritan, Somerville, South Bound Brook, Warren, and Watchung.

If you would like to be included in local recreation programs offered by your municipality, call us and we will assist with the inclusion process and help with activity modification or adaptation.
