Flying Permits

Flying enthusiasts who hold a valid AMA License and FAA license, and a Park Commission Flying Field Permit, may use the flying field at North Branch Park. Flying hours are 10:00am-7:30pm on weekdays, and 10:00am-5:30pm on weekends/holidays.

All flyers are considered "students" until rated by a designated Check Pilot, and students must fly with the assistance of a pilot. Members of the Somerset RC Club serve as volunteer check pilots, and conduct check flights for students to demonstrate proficiency in flight skills, safety techniques, and knowledge of flying field rules and regulations. Once a student has passed the required skills, pilot status will be issued and may be renewed on an annual basis.

Permits are valid for a calendar year, expiring December 31. In order to make the renewal process as simple as possible, you may renew your permit online or by postal mail. Online renewal instructions are located in the orange box to the right. Once the online portion is completed, please email your AMA membership card, FAA registration, and 2023 Park Commission card to sdahl@scparks.org. If renewing by postal mail, please send a copy of your AMA membership card, FAA registration, and Park Commission permit card to: Somerset County Park Commission, attn: Stephen Dahl, P.O. Box 5327, North Branch, NJ 08876. Please also enclose the appropriate fee in a check made payable to the “Somerset County Park Commission.”

2023 Fees are as follows:

  • Somerset County Resident: $30.00
  • Non-Resident: $50.00
  • Youth: $15.00

New flying field users must file for an initial permit in person.
